ms. patti shaw recycles old prayers.

while wandering through ballard yesterday shopping for powdered water retention gel (more on that later!),  i found myself wandering into patti shaw’s studio.  she has been collecting the little metal wick holders from used-up prayer candles in saint james cathedral for six years and creating  metal fabrics like the ones you see below.  how lovely to imagine the continued life of someone’s expired prayer!  it’d pleasant to imagine, whether you believe in prayers or not, the mental power that goes into wishing for something that becomes tangible in the little artifact of a used candle.

she’ll be having a showing at the valise gallery on vashon island on february 4th, 6 til 9 pm! take a look at her sculptural paintings and stamp-patchwork here.
